Background
Women are often underrepresented in the maritime world. This limits their career opportunities and diminishes the potential for growth and innovation in these fields. The Women on Board project was therefore launched to significantly promote equality and inclusion of women in sectors such as shipping, port operations, fisheries, and maritime energy.
Goals
The project pursues the overarching goal of sustainably strengthening the participation of women in various sectors of the maritime economy. A central concern is the reduction of existing gender inequalities in education and employment by promoting inclusive regional policy reforms to ensure equal opportunities for women and men. Furthermore, the project is committed to improving working conditions, particularly with regard to safety, well-being, and a supportive work environment. In this way, the maritime economy aims to make it more attractive and accessible for women in the long term.

Measures
- Establishment of regional stakeholder groups to help identify and evaluate best practices in promoting equality in the maritime economy
- Analysis of women’s participation in education and employment
- Interregional exchange of experiences through thematic seminars and study trips to learn from each other and develop common strategies
